MAPS Pharmacy Training

Advanced Apprenticeship for Pharmacy Technicians - Programme Overview

Why do I need an Apprenticeship?
The advance apprenticeship provides the opportunity to progress from assistant to technician status. Achievement allows registration with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society as a registered Pharmacy Technician. Achievement of advanced apprenticeship plus an A level in Chemistry may contribute to university entrance requirements for a first degree in Pharmacy.

What are the qualifications?
Successful achievement of the Apprenticeship consists of attaining the NVQ Level 3 in Pharmacy Services, completion of ERR workbook and Key skills in Communication and Application of Number at Level 2 and City and Guilds Technical Certificate in Pharmacy Services Level 3. These qualifications are together called a Framework and have been agreed by Skills for Health, the Sector Skills Council and the Royal Pharmaceutical Society as appropriate for Pharmacy use. Please see overleaf for details.

How much does it cost?
For learners aged 16-18 there is no charge to employer or learner, aged 19 and over there is an expectation that the employer will contribute to the costs. This will be by agreement between the employer and MAPS.

When can I start?
MAPS programmes can be started at any time throughout the year following eligibility checks for learner and employer.

How long does it last?
MAPS expect completion in 18 to 24 months depending on the learner. All learners are treated individually with target completion dates set according to experience and time given to learning.

What will MAPS do for you?
MAPS will undertake a skills scan and create an individual learning plan to assist the learner in developing the required expertise for their job. We provide regular visits to the workplace for assessment and training by fully qualified pharmacy assessors and certification of qualifications subject to successful completion for NVQ and Key Skills. Technical Certificate will be achieved by attending MAPS centre one day per week. Individual study will be required at home or at work for completion of assignments. MAPS will provide a Skills for Health Apprenticeship Completion Certificate. We also provide support to the onsite Pharmacist in mentoring learners.

Entry Requirements
It is the norm that apprentices are employed in a pharmacy setting. There are no formal academic qualifications required but potential learners will be expected to have the ability to achieve NVQ 3, Technical Certificate and Key Skills.
