Modern Apprenticeships
Early Years Care and Education
Both Foundation (NVQ Level 2) and Advanced (NVQ Level 3) Apprenticeships are available in Early Years Care. In addition to the NVQ, apprentices have to complete Key Skills at level 2 and achieve a Technical Certificate.
All apprentices are issued with their own NVQ text book, so that they have access to the main knowledge elements required for the NVQ from February 2003. Technical Certificates were introduced as part of the Modern Apprenticeship programmes. These will require some time away from the workplace and will be achieved by passing a written examination. Please speak to your MAPS Consultant for the latest information on their content and the options on how we deliver them.
All assessment for the NVQ is carried out in the workplace and MAPS provide for either a resident or visiting assessor to carry out the assessment. The majority of our nurseries do have their own assessor(s) and where required, MAPS can train existing nursery staff to become qualified assessors.
The NVQ level 2 consists of 8 mandatory units and 2 optional units. Apprentices are normally expected to complete this qualification within 15 months. The NVQ level 3 consists of 11 units plus 3 optional units with the anticipated timescale varying between 21 to 26 months depending on their age and whether they have previously completed the NVQ level 2.
